Wilson’s Smart Football Brings The Big Game To The Backyard [via Engadget]

Are you ready for some football?!

I know I am! Superbowl 50 is happening, tonight at 6:30pm at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California (or if you’re watching it on TV: CBS).  Well, Wilson wants to help with that experience. Recently, Engadget reported, “Wilson, which released a smart basketball last year, is expanding its connected sporting good repertoire to the realm of football.”  The Wilson X Connected Football, “is embedded with sensors that can measure stats like distance, speed, spiral efficiency and spin rate.  It’s smart enough to know if it’s caught or dropped and can transmit said information to a companion app via Bluetooth.”

The purpose of the ball is, “…to bring video games to the back yard,” according to Wilson. The football can be paired up with your smartphone, in which Bob Thurman, Wilson’s VP of Innovation tells Engadget you have to, “…deliberately flip the ball upside down from one tip to the other.  Otherwise, the ball will go to sleep after a period of non use.”

Although the Wilson brand makes the official NFL ball, according to Kevin Murphy, Wilson’s General Manager of American Football states, “This is not just for players; it’s for everyone.”

This isn’t actually a video game, but for, “…kids more active,” said Thurman. “We’re competing against video games. That started our whole line of thinking about the Wilson X and what we can do with it.”

I think this is a really good idea! Football is something that many children (and adults) love to play, whether for fun or as an actual sport.  To make it more interesting for them to enjoy it and to reel in others who aren’t into the sport as much by including technology and the smart phone (which most people are glued to) is a pretty decent idea.

Engadget adds, “The idea here is that with the Wilson X, you’re not just throwing the ball around the field. Because it’s connected to your phone, you can make the experience more interactive. For example, you can compare stats with your friends and compete against one other to see who has the better score.”

Football+Smartphone+Technology+Exercise=Staying fit and having fun.

A/N: Gems of the Week will be posted every Saturday on my blog, so be sure to look for it! I made an exception and posted this Gem of the week on Sunday to gear up for the Superbowl.  Hopefully everyone will enjoy the game…! Who do you think will win: The Panthers or the Broncos?

I just hope if the teams use the Microsoft Surface Tablets again, there will be no malfunction this time, like what happened during last weeks game at the AFC Championship with the Broncos and the Patriots…
